About
the SARGF

The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation is South Africa’s leading public health-focused non-profit organisation dedicated to preventing and reducing gambling-related harm. Through its flagship National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP), the Foundation addresses gambling harm as a public health issue, recognising the impact of South Africa’s socio-economic challenges on individuals, families, and communities.

Established under the National Gambling Regulations of 2004 and operating independently of the gambling industry, the Foundation advocates for player protection, safer gambling environments, and evidence-based regulatory reform. It also provides free counselling and treatment for those affected by gambling addiction, conducts research and nationwide screening, raises public awareness through education and advocacy, and delivers responsible gambling training and workplace wellness programmes across the industry.

GAMBLING SUMMIT

The Responsible Gambling Summit, a biennial event dedicated to advancing responsible gambling practices is hosted and organised by the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) in collaboration with leading regulatory bodies including the Eastern Cape Gambling Board, KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulator Authority, Limpopo Gambling Board, Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board and the National Gambling Board, the summit unites global experts, policymakers, industry leaders to address critical challenges in fostering responsible gambling.

A big thank you to the NRGP, for their unremitting support since 2014. When compulsive gambling brought me to my knees, the NRGP was there to assist with treatment expenses, which I otherwise would not have been able to afford. Their continued support, since, has included unlimited counsel by way of psychiatric and psychology care, both of which have included professional, yet nurturing guidance. I experience peace-of-mind knowing that the NRGP commits itself to making available these critical resources precisely because they avail themselves to an investment into my well-being. All this has afforded me a supportive recovery from an otherwise deadly compulsion.
I'm a single mom of two. What started as gambling with friends ten years ago spiralled into an addiction I couldn't control. I gambled my rent, my fuel money, my life became one big lie. By July 2017, I was physically, mentally, and emotionally drained. I couldn't carry on any longer. I saw Dr Heidi Sinclair and spent 30 days at Ixande Clinic. Through counselling and the 12 step programme, I learned to admit I was powerless against my addiction, and that's where my recovery began. I've now been clean for 7 months, and I still attend group sessions every second Saturday. I'll always be grateful to this programme for their support.
The assistance and support I have received from the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) has been invaluable . The programme has given me insight and clear understanding of my gambling addiction. It has provided essential professional guidance , counselling and rehabilitation opportunity for which I am most grateful. I encourage those in need of help to approach the SARGF . My thanks to the SARGF and all staff for this very vital service they provide.
I had my gambling under control, or so I thought. What started as fun slowly became an obsession. I was gambling with borrowed money, chasing the win that would fix everything. I lost my salary three months running, borrowed from loan sharks, and lost people I loved. When my family found out, they wanted nothing to do with me. That's when I knew enough was enough. I got the number for the SA Gambling Programme at the casino exit and called. The person I spoke to just listened, and for the first time in a long time, I felt hope. I was booked with a professional social worker. It wasn't easy, but I haven't set foot in a casino in 25 months. I'm grateful to Dr Heidi and the team for helping me get my life back.

What does the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation do?

The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the prevention and treatment of disordered gambling.

We have helped over 18,500 problem gamblers through our treatment and counselling programme and have been in operation for 18 years.

The NRGP is the flagship programme of the SARGF.

It is a world-renowned responsible gambling programme, providing the following three services:
